The number of slot fish being caught is different every night some nights quite a few other nights only a few. The smaller fish are biting every night and it does not matter if you are on the rock points or out on the mud flats. The inshore fishing has slowed down the majority of the fish are now out on the mud flats. The day time walleye bite has been very good for those who have live scopes and know how to use them. Those without live scopes are still catching fish just not as many. Baits that are working the best are night crawlers and leeches. Small mouth bass fishing continues to be good on the rock points, reefs and some of the weed beds. Northern Pike and Musky fishing has been slow. - [5/19/2026 Walleye fishing has been slower than normal because of the cool water temperatures and the persistently windy weather. The best bite has been in the evening from 8:30 to 10 pm. A slip bobber with a leech is what is working the best in the evening on the rocks in 10 to 14 feet. Trolling with Rapala's in the bays and on the rocks in the evenings is producing some big walleyes after dark. The day bite has been tougher with everyone seemingly catching some fish just not the numbers of fish we are accustomed to this time of the year. Day time people are using jig and shiner minnow and tube jigs in the weed beds and shallow rocks 6 to 12 feet. Others have reported some luck in the 16 to 20 foot depths with lindy rigs tipped with a shiner minnow, leech or night crawler. Small mouth bass bite has been good on the shallow rocks with plastics as well as live bait. Northern pike are being caught in the bays with weeds. Best results were at night either trolling crank baits or fishing with a slip bobber and a leech. The best depth at night was around 12 feet on both the sand and rocks. The night time fishing produced some real big walleyes 27 to 32 inches and some of them were still full of eggs. Day time fishing was best with a jig and shiner minnow or a leech depths were 12 to 20 feet. Water temperatures were as low as 46 to 47 degrees, fishing will improve a lot when the water temperatures warm into the fifties. Both the walleye and small mouth bass bite will get a lot better the next few weeks as the water warms. - [02/16/2024. A truck and wheelhouse went through the ice this morning at Rocky Reef in thirty feet of water. We have only let ATV'S and Snowmobiles go out on the ice this winter. I do not believe that the ice is safe for trucks or cars to be driving on the ice this winter. We have not allowed any cars or trucks on the ice this winter and we are not going to allow it for the balance of the winter. We checked ice out one mile this morning and consistently found 12 inches but there is 8 to 9 inches of black ice with 3 to 4 inches being white ice which has no strength. People have been going to the Mud flats on ATV'S and snowmobiles. Evening leeches and slip bobbers that bite is still good most nights but the bite has  been later. Slot for walleye keepers has increased and we can now keep walleyes 20 to 23 or over 28. This will help we have caught a lot of fish this year between 20 and 21 inches and until now we had to throw them back. Small Mouth Bass bite has been good most days on the rocks. - [01/20/2023  The ice on Mille Lacs is not good a lot of slush and snow. The ice thickness is way below normal for this time of the year. We are finding the good black ice in the 10 to 12 inch range with some areas only being 9 inches. I had one of my regular customers stop in and told me he had went out with his truck and wheel house this past weekend on the southern part of the lake because we have not let any trucks out. He said at best the ice might have been 12 inches he drilled his holes the night he arrived and in the morning there was a foot of water around his house. He said he had a very difficult time getting back off the lake because of the deep slush. Ian Leonard on channel 9 the last few weeks has been warning people that this years ice does not have the same strength as ice on a normal winter because of a Igloo effect. He said because of the amount of snow and lack of normal below zero weather the ice is not getting thicker and in fact is being fractured by the warmer water under the ice. The ice this winter is not safe for truck traffic some resorts are driving on it but in my opinion they are putting there customers life's at risk, I will not do that. I am only letting ATV's and Snowmobiles out. Walleye fishing over all has been pretty good in the bay and real good on the mud flats. - [7/13/2022 Walleye fishing and the use of live bait will once again be allowed this coming Saturday July 16th. The anglers and businesses really got the shaft this year with the 15 day bait and walleye closure. They purposely drive people away from the lake with this regulation. This year there harvest and mortality numbers were about one third of what they expected by the end of June but they implemented the 15 day no bait and walleye closure anyway. If they do not want people fishing for walleyes for 15 days fine then make the mud flats off limits that is where the majority of them are this time of the year. Smallmouth bass are being caught on the rock points and reefs in 5 to 19 feet of water. There are still some walleyes in the shoreline rocks being caught early in the morning and in the evening with jig and a minnow or leech and slip bobber. A lot of the fish have moved out to the flats and that is the best day time fishing, leeches, night crawlers and minnows are all working. By the end of the week the majority of the walleyes will be on the flats for the rest of the summer. Smallmouth bass are pretty much done spawning and are being caught on the rocks with plastics , leeches, night crawlers and pike suckers. Some northern pike are being caught in the bays. - [Ice and Fishing report 2/11/2021. I checked the ice yesterday. The places I had marked with the 11 inch ice is now 15 inches. The other places I checked the Ice was 16 to 16 1/2 inches. With this below zero weather we should gain another 3 or 4 inches by the weekend. I plowed a road to Curly's flat and after that there was very little snow. The snow once you get out a few miles is minimal and so hard you can drive right on top of it and barely sink in. I am now allowing trucks and wheel houses to go out. Most of the ice was 11 inches we found some small areas with 12 inch ice and we also found some areas with 7 and 8 inch ice. DNR guidelines are 12 to 15 inches of ice for a medium size

The majority of the ice on the main lake is 11 to 11 1/2 inches thick. We also found areas of 7 to 10 inch ice with more areas of slush.

Size wise the fish being caught are small to large. The number of slot fish being caught is different every night some nights quite a few other nights only a few. The smaller fish
