08/01/2023 Walleye fishing continues to be good in fact very good for this time of the year. Daytime night crawlers and spinners, leeches rigging and leeches and slip bobbers are working. Evening leeches and slip bobbers that bite is still good most nights but the bite has been later. Slot for walleye keepers has increased and we can now keep walleyes 20 to 23 or over 28. This will help we have caught a lot of fish this year between 20 and 21 inches and until now we had to throw them back. Small Mouth Bass bite has been good most days on the rocks. Some northern pike are being caught in the bays with weeds. Muskie fishing has been slow. Perch are biting good on the mud flats but they are a mix of small medium and large.

7/13/2023 Walleye fishing has been very good so far in July their have been a few slow days but over all fishing has been good. Day bite they are using leeches and slip bobbers, leeches rigging and drifting. Slow death with night crawlers is working good and crawlers and spinners are also working most days. Night bite has been very good all year with only a couple of nights where it was slower than normal and that was around the full moon which is normal for the bobber bite to be slower. Smallmouth bass fishing has been very good some days and some days have been slow. A few people have been fishing for Northern Pike and results for the most part have been okay. The walleye and perch action is all on the mudflats right now. Smallmouth fish the rocks, Northerns fish the weeds.

7/13/2023 Walleye fishing has been very good so far in July their have been a few slow days but over all fishing has been good. 5/29/2023 Walleye fishing has been the best in the evening a lot of fish are being caught from 8 to 10 pm. The daytime walleye bite has been the best when is has been windy and cloudy. The next couple of weeks walleyes will be more spread out as they transition from shorelines to the Mud Flats. Some people have already been fishing the Mud Flats and are catching some walleyes. Small mouth bass action is getting better as a lot of them have finished spawning. Northern pike action has also been good even though there are not of weeds yet.

5/29/2023 Walleye fishing has been the best in the evening a lot of fish are being caught from 8 to 10 pm. The daytime walleye bite has been the best when is has been windy and cloudy. The next couple of weeks walleyes will be more spread out as they transition from shorelines to the Mud Flats. Some people have already been fishing the Mud Flats and are catching some walleyes. 01/20/2023 The ice on Mille Lacs is not good a lot of slush and snow. The ice thickness is way below normal for this time of the year. We are finding the good black ice in the 10 to 12 inch range with some areas only being 9 inches. I had one of my regular customers stop in and told me he had went out with his truck and wheel house this past weekend on the southern part of the lake because we have not let any trucks out. He said at best the ice might have been 12 inches he drilled his holes the night he arrived and in the morning there was a foot of water around his house. He said he had a very difficult time getting back off the lake because of the deep slush. Ian Leonard on channel 9 the last few weeks has been warning people that this years ice does not have the same strength as ice on a normal winter because of a Igloo effect. He said because of the amount of snow and lack of normal below zero weather the ice is not getting thicker and in fact is being fractured by the warmer water under the ice. The ice this winter is not safe for truck traffic some resorts are driving on it but in my opinion they are putting there customers life’s at risk, I will not do that. I am only letting ATV’s and Snowmobiles out. Walleye fishing over all has been pretty good in the bay and real good on the mud flats. Some of the fisherman told me even on the flats when they have drilled some holes water has come up and flooded the area where they were fishing.

01/20/2023 The ice on Mille Lacs is not good a lot of slush and snow. The ice thickness is way below normal for this time of the year. We are finding the good black ice in the 10 to 12 inch range with some areas only being 9 inches. ATV and snowmobiles have been going out in the bays and out to the mud flats. Walleye fishing has been good in the bays as well as the mud flats. 1/02/2023 Ice conditions did not change this week we have a lot of areas that have 10 inches of the good black ice. 12/17/2022 Mille Lacs is in tough shape after the winter storm. We now have 8 inches of ice with 3 to 4 inches of water on top of the ice and 12 inches of snow on top of that. A ATV tried to go out but iced up so bad they had to come back in. We now need 20 plus below weather for a extended period of time if the ice is going to get thicker.

Under the snow we found 7 inches in most areas however we did find some 5 inch ice out towards the rockpile in the bay. Walleye fishing has been good in the bays and on the rock reefs. People are driving ATV’S and snowmobiles on the lake.

So this end of the lake the ice is thin and not safe to go on. There are people fishing on the South end Bays Isle, Wahkon and Cove where they have considerably more ice. I went through Isle on Friday and there were some ATV’S out on the ice in the bay. Be safe check with nearby resorts on the side of the lake where you want to go fishing.
